Week 10 – Introduction of the iPad

ipad

This week we received an iPad to carry out research with regard to the educational advantages and disadvantages associated with the incorporation of iPads into classroom life. Ultimately, this marks an exciting event in our elective studies as the iPad has proven to be a predominant topic within educational discourse.

We explored the possible advantages and disdavantages associated with the iPad this week, examples including:

Advantages:

Accessible to all – work can be differntiated.

Unlimited Resources.

Appeals to a range of learners –  kinaesthetic, visual, auditory.

Autonomy of learning – The child is active and responsible for his her own learning.

Fosters creativity and expression. Artist David Hockney believes this product is ‘a wonderful new drawing medium.’

The video below emphasises the fact that iPads can be used as a medium for artistic expression

Disadvantages:

The Cost.

A possible distraction.

Extensive planning required with regard to classroom management.

Lack of knowledge to benefit fully from the device.

Fear with regard to the fragile nature of the product.

The graph below, is a summary of market research carried out by PC world which illustrates the main reasons why people buy the iPad. This survey alludes to the issue that the price is reasonable and that people recognise the advantages associated with this Apple product.

My Experience

I had never previously had the opportunity to work with an iPad and was unaware of the associated Apple vocabulary. Therefore, this week’s lecture has informed my knowledge with regard to certain aspects. For example:

Siri: As outlined by apple Siri ‘is an intelligent personal assistant’ who responds to basic commands from the iPad user.  I was oblivious to this feature prior to the lecture even though I am the owner of an iPhone.

Photo Stream: This enables iPad users to share their photo’s with others instantaneously.

iPad Sync & Charge Carts: A mobile piece of equipment which charges and updates up to 30 ipads from one Mac laptop.

These are just some of the features of Apple software which I had no knowledge of  and ultimately, this prohibited my interaction with apple products. Undoubtedly, the next three weeks will extend, enhance and develop my understanding of iPads and their relevance within the sphere of education.
